DESCRIPTION:Milkweed Matters Book Signing. \nSaturday\, March 14 –  10 am-1 pm at The Bird House. \n The Bird House welcomes Lisa Conners to the store for a signing of her children’s book “Milkweed Matters.” Beginning with the life cycle of the milkweed plant\, this book follows the other species intricately tied to it in a typical food chain starting with a milkweed plant in the US and ending with the owl and decomposers in Mexico. Other life cycles the reader will encounter are the monarch butterfly\, black-eared mouse\, owl and decomposers. This book aims to help young readers see the connections between life cycles and food chains. While nonfiction\, it reads as a story to engage young readers and is also useful for teachers in the classroom through grade four. Second place in book category for the Virginia Outdooor Writers Association Excellence in Craft contest\, 2017.

Whether you hang it in a window or showcase it as a living centerpiece\, your orchid kokedama is sure to bring beauty to any space. No green thumb required — just bring your love for plants and creativity! All materials to create your kokedama are provided. \nMeet your instructor\, Liz! \nLiz Gatto is a new face at the Botanical Gardens\, joining our team in April of 2023 as our Educator and Program Coordinator. Liz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History with Museum Studies from Niagara University. She is passionate about museum education and is excited to bring her creativity to the Botanical Gardens. Prior to joining the team\, Liz worked in the department of Art and Family Programs for several years at Artpark in Lewiston\, NY and has interned with multiple galleries including the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Liz is also an artist herself\, her love for botany and nature shines through her personal artwork. She is very much looking forward to getting the public inspired by the gardens and offering creative workshops. In her spare time Liz enjoys drawing\, painting\, traveling\, drinking coffee\, visiting museums\, and taking care of her many houseplants!
