DESCRIPTION:Biochar 101 Workshop\n\nSaturday\, April 18\, 2026\, 10:00 am – Noon\n\nYou may have heard of biochar and its many benefits when added to your soil\, but just what is it and what are the benefits to using it. Biochar isn’t something new it was developed by pre-Columbian indigenous populations in the Amazon Basin (mainly modern-day Brazil) over 2\,500 years ago. Did you know you can make your own biochar at home from different types of biomasses such as woody plant material and even grasses. \nSonnenberg Gardens and Cornell Cooperative Extension are hosting a free workshop on Saturday April 18\, 2026 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Rain date Sunday April 19\, 2026 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm.  \nThe workshop will be held at Sonnenberg Gardens\, 250 Gibson St. Canandaigua NY. The instructor is Kathleen Draper who has been involved in the biochar industry for the past 15 years as an educator\, researcher\, and consultant. Kathleen will be doing a live demonstration on how to make biochar that you can do the same at home and explain just what it is\, its many uses and how biochar improves your soil and impacts climate change.  \nYou must register for this event by contacting Cornell Cooperative Extension at 585-394-3977 ext.427 or email Nancy .

DESCRIPTION:Plant Maintenance: Pinching\, Pruning\, Staking & Dead-Heading\nOnce your plants are going\, what’s next? This class will cover the basics of plant maintenance\, from pinching\, pruning\, staking and deadheading. The teachers will focus on 10 commonly grown plant varieties. Taught by Master Gardeners Brad & Beth. \nClasses are offered in partnership between the Massachusetts Avenue Project\, Urban Roots Cooperative Garden Market\, and Grassroots Gardens of WNY. \nMAP is a nonprofit food hub and urban farm that promotes equity and access by connecting people to nutritious\, local food. Located on Buffalo’s West Side\, our dedicated staff and volunteers work in neighborhoods throughout Buffalo to build connections with people and work with them to build a food system that benefits people\, the planet and our regional economy. \nWe offer culinary education classes on a sliding scale with the goal of bringing people together to share good food. Our classes promote cross cultural learning\, teach recipes using fresh\, nutritious seasonal produce\, and educate on food preservation methods such as pickling and fermentation. \nWhen you take a class at MAP\, you are helping to support our mission to nurture the growth of a diverse\, accessible\, and equitable local food system\, promote economic opportunities\, and empower youth through social change education.

SUMMARY:2026 GROS Orchid Show
DESCRIPTION:The Genesee Region Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale. \n\n\nThe GROS held our first Orchid Show in April of 1969 at the Garden Center of Rochester; we recorded some 225 visitors.. Many other of our annual shows of that era consisted of groups of orchids displayed on shelves\, with little adornment or attempt to create a “natural” or artistic environment that is typical of orchid shows today. \nIn 1971\, the club presented its show at Sibley’s – Rochester’s fabled flagship downtown department store\, and over the years\, we’ve held our annual Spring Shows at various locations around Rochester. By 1978\, our show at the Garden Center drew over 1\,800 people! \nOur first show to feature American Orchid Society judging dates to 1980\, when two plants received awards: Oncidum Purple Envy ‘Suzy’ AM/AOS and Phalaenopsis Spitzberg ‘Mrs. March’\, HCC/AOS. \nWe are planning for our 50th annual orchid show to be our largest and most exciting ever!
