SUMMARY:Wild Ones HGCNY: Meadow Creation by Sam Quinn
DESCRIPTION:Today\, many landowners are interested in meadows as a way to benefit wildlife and reduce some of their lawn area\, which can save money long-term compared to typical lawncare. But\, this process can be daunting with so many factors to consider like how to remove the lawn or other vegetation\, how to design meadow plant composition\, where to buy seeds and other materials\, how to monitor to ensure the meadow is functioning as intended\, and numerous other questions. Upland meadows in the northeastern US are an example of an artificial ecosystem\, i.e.\, a plant community created and maintained by people to meet certain objectives\, like supporting pollinators in our rapidly changing landscape. Many of these upland meadows trace back to the land-management practices of Native Peoples\, who created and maintained these open spaces in landscapes that would otherwise be wooded. Sam is a conservation biologist who has been creating meadows since 2010 and has recently expanded this effort through his company\, Meadowcraft Ecological Services. He will present on the meadow creation process and share practical guidance geared toward landowners interested in learning about this multi-year process. \nSam Quinn is a conservation biologist who helps clients design\, establish and manage meadows\, as well as other natural features of their land. He is the co-owner of Meadowcraft Ecological Services\, a company focused on working with landowners to enhance their property’s ecological function and habitat quality for pollinators\, birds\, soil biota and other elements of biodiversity. He has helped create thousands of acres of meadows throughout the US\, primarily in the Northeast. In addition to establishing these plant communities\, Sam’s biggest motivation is to help landowners become confident stewards of their land. \nCome at 1 p.m. for refreshments and chat with other native plant enthusiasts. The presentation starts at 1:30. This meeting is both in-person and on Zoom. Registration is only needed for Zoom attendance. \nZOOM REGISTRATION LINK: \nhttps://wildones-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/8p4R8VJCTVCH1MKZUPAJ7w

SUMMARY:Bonsai Bar
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Bar @ OSB Ciderworks – Buffalo\nDwarf Umbrella Bonsai \nAbout the Event \nBonsai Bar is a night of fun at a local venue near you that you don’t want to miss! Beginner workshops are perfect for you to learn everything you need to know to walk away with your very own tiny tree. So grab a friend\, your beverage of choice\, and get ready for a great 2 hours of everything bonsai. \nAbout the Venue \nWe are an Upstate NY craft ciderworks\, operated by siblings Elise and Eric Smith. Our name pays homage to our father and his late uncle. Back in the day they hid their homemade hard cider from Aunt Bobby\, in stumps. The phrase “let’s go blow up some stumps” became code for backyard swilling because the cider was so strong it could blow up stumps. We make a variation of this cider in-house and think fond thoughts of Uncle Charlie every time we talk about it. We utilize NY apples\, as well as other local ingredients to ferment tasty libations for locals and cider enthusiasts alike. In our gift shop you will find goods that are printed by local companies and art made by talented people from the surrounding areas. \nYou get to keep: \n\nA tree you pick\nA ceramic bonsai pot for your tree\n2-hours of bonsai wisdom\nOngoing support for your tree through our Tree-iage program\n\nWe have for you to borrow: \n\nA bin to collect soil\nShears to trim\nChop stick for digging
