Biochar isn’t something new it was developed by pre-Columbian indigenous populations in the Amazon Basin (mainly modern-day Brazil) over 2\,500 years ago. Did you know you can make your own biochar at home from different types of biomasses such as woody plant material and even grasses. \nSonnenberg Gardens and Cornell Cooperative Extension are hosting a free workshop on Saturday April 18\, 2026 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Rain date Sunday April 19\, 2026 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm.  \nThe workshop will be held at Sonnenberg Gardens\, 250 Gibson St. Canandaigua NY. The instructor is Kathleen Draper who has been involved in the biochar industry for the past 15 years as an educator\, researcher\, and consultant. Kathleen will be doing a live demonstration on how to make biochar that you can do the same at home and explain just what it is\, its many uses and how biochar improves your soil and impacts climate change.  \nYou must register for this event by contacting Cornell Cooperative Extension at 585-394-3977 ext.427 or email Nancy .

SUMMARY:2026 GROS Orchid Show
DESCRIPTION:The Genesee Region Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show and Sale. \n\n\nThe GROS held our first Orchid Show in April of 1969 at the Garden Center of Rochester; we recorded some 225 visitors.. Many other of our annual shows of that era consisted of groups of orchids displayed on shelves\, with little adornment or attempt to create a “natural” or artistic environment that is typical of orchid shows today. \nIn 1971\, the club presented its show at Sibley’s – Rochester’s fabled flagship downtown department store\, and over the years\, we’ve held our annual Spring Shows at various locations around Rochester. By 1978\, our show at the Garden Center drew over 1\,800 people! \nOur first show to feature American Orchid Society judging dates to 1980\, when two plants received awards: Oncidum Purple Envy ‘Suzy’ AM/AOS and Phalaenopsis Spitzberg ‘Mrs. March’\, HCC/AOS. \nWe are planning for our 50th annual orchid show to be our largest and most exciting ever! SUMMARY:Ecological Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Earth Day and learn how you can make an impact in your own garden! \n\n\n\n\nYou have the power to create real ecological change—right in your own backyard. Discover the core principles of ecological gardening and learn how to transform your garden into a space that’s both environmentally responsible and visually stunning. Create habitat\, manage water wisely\, and reduce your ecological impact—all while cultivating a landscape rich with beauty and year-round interest. \nWednesday\, April 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. \nPublic $20\, TBG Members $15 (plus applicable taxes and fees) \nAbout Lucy Saunders \nLucy Saunders is a Toronto-based Landscape Designer and lifelong gardener whose love of plants has shaped her life on two continents. From the UK to Canada\, she has always found space for a garden — no matter the size. \nShe believes our home gardens can be powerful forces for change: supporting pollinators and wildlife\, helping address climate pressures\, and even contributing to food security — all from our own backyards. \nMotivated by this conviction\, Lucy pursued formal training in Landscape Design through the University of Guelph. She now designs beautiful\, ecologically balanced spaces for her clients and tends her own garden alongside a Toronto ravine\, cultivating native and edible plants and proving that beauty and ecological responsibility can thrive side by side. \nAbout Toronto Master Gardeners \nToronto Master Gardeners (TMG) is a volunteer not-for-profit organization that shares current\, science-based horticultural information with the gardening public through various channels\, including in person\, in print\, through the media\, and online. The committed volunteers support and inspire the community\, and continually update the sound knowledge required to help them. SUMMARY:Bonsai Bar
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Bar @ OSB Ciderworks – Buffalo\nAbout the Event \nBonsai Bar is a night of fun at a local venue near you that you don’t want to miss! Beginner workshops are perfect for you to learn everything you need to know to walk away with your very own tiny tree. So grab a friend\, your beverage of choice\, and get ready for a great 2 hours of everything bonsai. \nAbout the Venue \nWe are an Upstate NY craft ciderworks\, operated by siblings Elise and Eric Smith. Our name pays homage to our father and his late uncle. Back in the day they hid their homemade hard cider from Aunt Bobby\, in stumps. The phrase “let’s go blow up some stumps” became code for backyard swilling because the cider was so strong it could blow up stumps. We make a variation of this cider in-house and think fond thoughts of Uncle Charlie every time we talk about it. We utilize NY apples\, as well as other local ingredients to ferment tasty libations for locals and cider enthusiasts alike. In our gift shop you will find goods that are printed by local companies and art made by talented people from the surrounding areas. \nYou get to keep: \n\nA tree you pick\nA ceramic bonsai pot for your tree\n2-hours of bonsai wisdom\nOngoing support for your tree through our Tree-iage program\n\nWe have for you to borrow: \n\nA bin to collect soil\nShears to trim\nChop stick for digging
