SUMMARY:Nature App Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Nature study has always depended on careful observation\, strong field skills\, and shared knowledge\, and today’s smartphones now serve as powerful extensions of that tradition. In this workshop\, Associate Professor John Bateman of Finger Lakes Community College explores a curated set of modern nature apps that support botanical exploration\, plant identification\, and ecological documentation\, with special attention to tools useful for tracking invasive species. \nWe will look at practical applications including plant identification platforms\, species observation logging tools\, and mapping systems that allow users to record\, visualize\, and share occurrences of both native and invasive plants. We will also discuss how citizen science platforms contribute to regional and global datasets\, and how these tools are being used in real-world conservation and invasive species monitoring efforts. Special emphasis will be placed on how these apps can enhance awareness of invasive species distribution in regions like the Finger Lakes\, and how careful data entry and verification can turn everyday field observations into meaningful ecological information. \nDesigned for members of one of the oldest botanical societies in the United States\, this program bridges traditional field botany with modern digital tools\, offering practical ways to deepen observation\, improve documentation\, and better understand the changing plant communities of our landscapes. \nBe sure to bring your smartphone!  \nThis program is free and open to all

SUMMARY:Bonsai Bar
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Bar @ OSB Ciderworks – Buffalo\nDwarf Umbrella Bonsai \nAbout the Event \nBonsai Bar is a night of fun at a local venue near you that you don’t want to miss! Beginner workshops are perfect for you to learn everything you need to know to walk away with your very own tiny tree. So grab a friend\, your beverage of choice\, and get ready for a great 2 hours of everything bonsai. \nAbout the Venue \nWe are an Upstate NY craft ciderworks\, operated by siblings Elise and Eric Smith. Our name pays homage to our father and his late uncle. Back in the day they hid their homemade hard cider from Aunt Bobby\, in stumps. The phrase “let’s go blow up some stumps” became code for backyard swilling because the cider was so strong it could blow up stumps. We make a variation of this cider in-house and think fond thoughts of Uncle Charlie every time we talk about it. We utilize NY apples\, as well as other local ingredients to ferment tasty libations for locals and cider enthusiasts alike. In our gift shop you will find goods that are printed by local companies and art made by talented people from the surrounding areas. \nYou get to keep: \n\nA tree you pick\nA ceramic bonsai pot for your tree\n2-hours of bonsai wisdom\nOngoing support for your tree through our Tree-iage program\n\nWe have for you to borrow: \n\nA bin to collect soil\nShears to trim\nChop stick for digging

SUMMARY:Bonsai Bar
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Bar @ OSB Ciderworks – Buffalo\nDwarf Jade Bonsai \nAbout the Event \nBonsai Bar is a night of fun at a local venue near you that you don’t want to miss!
